Let’s dive right in by getting accustomed to some of the main tools we’ll use throughout the tutorials on Davinci Resolve’s color page. Since we’ll be using these tools throughout the series, it’s essential we know their location and get familiar with their functions.
DaVinci Resolve is an industry-standard application found in most high-end coloring houses. Its entire post-production suite includes ingestion, editing, color grading, compositing, audio editing, and exporting.
The great news is that the FREE version of DaVinci Resolve is more than enough for starting with video editing, color correcting, and exporting. If you don’t have it already, you can download it here.
So let’s get familiar with a few tools we’ll use on the color page:
- The Gallery — where we’ll import reference photos and store stills
- Timeline — the timeline snapshot
- Clips Strip — the thumbnail view of the clips in your current timeline
- Node Editor — where our color adjustments will live in a node structure
- Lightbox — a grid view of your clips, great for checking your grades for consistency
- Primaries Color Wheels — the main color and luminosity adjustment tools
- Middle Panel — various tools used for secondary color adjustments
- Scopes Panel — a set of indicators used to measure and diagnose the image
